Home Edit | Downstairs Toilet Renovation

The downstairs toilet is always the forgotten room of the house when it comes to design. The room ends up being a functional space with no interest or design. There are a lot of ways of making your WC more interesting, from unique tiles to beautiful wallpapers, sometimes it’s a simple change that has a huge impact. So here’s my downstairs toilet renovation.

As you can see before our downstairs toilet had no personality, mainly due to colour and lighting. The first thing we did was install Philip hue bulbs. This allowed us to change the tone from yellow to a crisp blue/white. This intern made the room look brighter and the floor tiles actually grey (rather than grey/green). Another element of the toilet I hated was the tiny sink. You couldn’t wash your hands properly in it without water going all over the floor, so it had to go. I also never understand why you would have a single tile behind the sink. In my opinion, the whole wall in half hight tiles looks sleeker and brings the room together.

After a couple of hours on Pinterest and making a mood board of the room we placed an order for everything and got to work destroying the room. We kept the floor tiles, toilet, radiator, walls and toilet roll holder, everything else has been replaced or added.

So here is the downstairs toilet transformation. The room now looks bright and modern, with sleek white herringbone tiles drawing your eye up to the stunning wallpaper. By having black grout it makes more of a feature of the tiles, which is love.

What about the wallpaper?

I am literally in love with it! It’s from a company called Photowall, who are based in Sweden. They do the most beautiful wallpapers, prints and posters. They kindly gifted this wallpaper to me so I could show you how easily wallpaper can transform even the smallest of rooms. This wallpaper Summer House Watercolour Blue looks like a gradient watercolour drawing you eye diagonally from top to the bottom. I’ve never put wallpaper up myself but it was really easy and only took a couple of hours. Without the wallpaper, this room would lack personally and more importantly colour. Surprisingly by adding a contrast of light and dark colours in a small room, we have made it look a lot bigger.

One thing to note is you have to be careful with wallpapers in bathrooms due to moisture exposure. As this is going on a small WC and the two walls where it will have no contact with water, the wallpaper will be ok but if you have moisture on the paper it could cause damage.

The Finished Look

For me no room is complete without some accessories, the interior designer in me gets so excited. I love having groupings of three items with staggering heights and mirrors help to bounce around light. If you have a small room mirror help to make a room look bigger. I added touches of pink, grey and green into the accessories to make the room look fresh and add some contrast against the blue wallpaper. If you want some greenery in a windowless room look at buying fake or dried plants. They add a gorgeous softness to the room without the hassle of water or light.

So that’s my downstair toilet transformation. Hopefully, you can see how easily you can transform a room. For a bathroom, a splash of colour and tile design can make a world of difference.
